Piers (Nezu in the Japanese version) is the gym leader of Spikemuth from Pokemon Sword and Shield. He is Pokemon's first dark-type gym leader.
Piers stands out as a gym leader not only for his type, but for also being the only leader in Galar who chooses not to Dynamax his Pokemon. Spikemuth itself doesn't allow for Dynamaxing, but Piers goes a step further to not even Dynamax outside of Spikemuth. Despite this, Piers is regarded as a strong trainer.

When not running Spikemuth gym, Piers is a singer known throughout Galar. Despite his cold exterior, he is closely protective of his little sister Marnie, who is joining the player in the battle to become Galar champion. Piers serves as the unofficial "leader" of Sword and Shield's Team Rocket-adjacent enemy team, Team Yell - he does not know or approve of this. Unlike other Pokemon entries, Team Yell is not a criminal gang, but an overzealous group of stans supporting Marnie in her journey at the cost of others. After the player wins the championship, Piers is eager to step down from his role as gym leader and stick to performing, passing the title down to Marnie.
